Frequently Asked Questions
During an Interview
With over 25 years of experience interviewing families, I've identified key questions to help guide them in selecting a potential Postpartum Doula or Newborn Care Specialist.

Every Postpartum Doula and Newborn Care Specialist brings a unique blend of background, education, and services to the families they support. It's important to recognize that there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to this practice. The information provided here represents common practices as well as personal methodologies, ensuring families the tailored support they need during this special time.
What is your rate?
Current rates in the San Diego area vary based on the provider's level of experience and whether the family has a single baby or multiples. For a newer Postpartum Doula (PPD) or Newborn Care Specialist (NCS), the standard rate is $40–$50 per hour for a singleton. For a more experienced PPD or NCS, rates typically range from $55–$65 per hour for a singleton, with rates increasing for multiples.
What certifications do you have?
What is your sick policy?
In the event of illness, we would discuss rescheduling shifts or issuing a possible refund, depending on where the missed shifts fall within the contract.
Are you comfortable with pets?
I'm comfortable with most pets and enjoy the company of furry family members in the middle of the night. For aggressive or unpredictable animals, I ask that they be secured in a crate or another room during my shift.
How does billing work?
50% of the total contracted amount is due at contract signing in the form of a non-refundable retainer. This retainer will be applied to the last half of your scheduled shifts. The first half of the contract will be billed weekly through the Wix invoicing platform.
Are you okay with video cameras?
Yes. I ask that cameras not be located in the bathroom or pointed directly at the place I'll be resting. Facing baby's sleep space is optimal. Turning off the sound on the nights I'm there may provide better rest for you.
Do you have minimums?
My overnight shifts have an 8-hour minimum, and my daytime shifts have a 6-hour minimum. I do not require a minimum number of nights per week or a minimum contract length.
Do you meal prep?
I currently work overnight shifts, and for safety reasons, I don't use the stove during that time. My primary focus overnight is the baby, and stovetop cooking requires stepping away and staying attentive to an open flame or hot burner, which isn't compatible with needing to respond quickly if baby wakes or needs care. To avoid any risk of an unattended stove, I stick to microwave-safe or no-cook options for any meals or snacks during overnight shifts.
Do you have a backup in the event of illness?
I have a couple of trusted providers I can check with for backup support; however, availability is not guaranteed.
Do you offer sibling care?
Sibling care is not part of my scope of practice at this time.
What resting requirements do you have?
I can adapt to most any home. I just ask that a clean, working bathroom be available, along with a comfortable, flat surface to rest on, such as a couch or bed.
Food and drink.
I bring my own food and drink to each shift. If your family has any religious dietary preferences, please let me know so I can be mindful not to bring certain foods into the home. Additionally, if you have a strict designated area for eating or drinking, please let me know so I can respect that as well.
What does a typical shift look like?
I typically arrive at 9 or 10pm and start with a quick update on how the day has gone, including what feedings will look like overnight and what the goal is for the shift, whether that's extra rest for the parents or a breastfeeding focus. Throughout the night, I primarily tend to baby's needs, and I wash up bottles and pump parts before my shift ends.
Do you carry liability insurance?
Yes, I am insured through CM&F.
Are you vaccinated for Tdap, Covid, Flu?
I am vaccinated for Tdap and Covid. I am unable to receive the flu vaccine due to an allergy; however, I'm happy to wear a mask during flu season to provide families peace of mind.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept credid card, Zelle or Venmo
Do you offer sleep training?
I practice sleep shaping prior to 3 months of age. Babies under 12 weeks do not yet have the hormones needed to support a regulated circadian rhythm and consistent sleep cycles. This is developmentally necessary, as infants need frequent feedings around the clock to regulate their glucose levels and support rapid growth. I can recommend gentle sleep shaping routines that can begin on day one of being home. For more challenging sleep issues after 12 weeks, I can refer you to highly recommended specialists in this area.
