Between advice from relatives, TikTok trends, and registry must-haves, it's easy to end up with a nursery full of gear that never gets used. As a Newborn Care Specialist and Postpartum Doula, I’m all about helping families prepare practically, not perfectly, for their baby’s arrival.

Here’s a thoughtfully curated, experience-backed checklist of baby essentials to have ready before your little one makes their debut.

Open diaper bag neatly packed with baby wipes, diapers, and newborn essentials, ready for on-the-go use.

✔️ Safety First

  • Car Seat (installed by a certified technician)

Before baby comes, schedule a car seat installation check with a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST). Safe travel starts day one.

🍼 Feeding Supplies

  • A selection of bottles with both wide and narrow nipples

Babies can be picky, and what works for one may be rejected by another. Have a few styles on hand, including preemie flow (P-flow) nipples, especially for newborns who may struggle with faster flows or those who will be breastfeeding.

  • A researched and chosen can of infant formula

Even if you plan to breastfeed, it’s smart to have a backup. Emergencies, low supply, or a change in feeding plans happen, and preparation means peace of mind.

  • Burp cloths (muslin preferred)

Lightweight, absorbent, and multifunctional. You’ll want a lot of these.

🧼 Diapering & Bath Time

  • Water-based wipes

Gentle for newborn skin and less likely to cause irritation. Unscented is best.

  • Diapers (newborn and size 1)

Babies grow fast, so having a few of each size is a good bet.

  • High-quality, natural baby wash

Choose a gentle cleanser free of synthetic fragrance and harsh chemicals. A little goes a long way on delicate newborn skin.

🛏️ Sleep Essentials

  • Multiple types of swaddles

Try a few styles, traditional muslin swaddles, Velcro or zipper swaddles, and even transitional ones for when baby starts to roll. Each baby has a preference.

  • Onesie pajamas with zippers or magnetic closures

Avoid snaps in the dark, trust me. Go for soft, breathable materials with easy diaper access.

  • Pacifiers (multiple styles)

Some babies are soothed by them, some aren’t interested. Having options (orthodontic, round, or flat) gives your baby a chance to choose.

💖 Bonus Baby Supplies That Make Life Easier

  • Diaper caddy or organizer

Especially helpful for nighttime changes—keeps everything within reach.

  • Nasal aspirator (bulb or electric)+ nasal saline spray or drops

Nasal saline helps loosen mucus so the aspirator can do its job better.

  • Digital thermometer

  • Sound machine

Mimics womb-like sounds and helps baby sleep longer stretches.

Health & Safety

  • Baby nail file or clippers – Baby nails grow fast and can scratch.

  • Infant Tylenol – For use with pediatrician guidance.

  • Baby first aid kit – Thermometer, nasal saline, bandages, etc.

  • Gas drops or gripe water – Optional but helpful for gassy newborns.

🛁 Bath Time

  • Baby bathtub or bath seat

  • Soft baby towels and washcloths

  • Hooded towels – Cozy and adorable.

  • Baby lotion or oil – Natural, fragrance-free is best.

🛏️ Sleep Space

  • Safe bassinet or crib – Firm, flat mattress with fitted sheet.

  • Blackout curtains or portable blackout shades

  • Baby monitor – Audio or video, depending on family preference.

🍽️ Feeding Gear (in addition to bottles/formula already listed)

  • Bottle drying rack

  • Bottle brush – For thorough cleaning.

  • Sterilizer (optional) – Especially helpful in the early months.

  • Nursing pillow – Useful for both breast and bottle feeding.

🚗 Travel & On-the-Go

  • Diaper bag – Stocked and ready to go.

  • Portable changing pad

  • Stroller – Consider lifestyle (compact, jogging, travel system).

  • Baby carrier or wrap – Hands-free bonding time!

Final Thoughts

You don’t need everything the internet throws at you, but having these baby supplies ready can ease anxiety and create a smoother transition into parenthood.
